This is the best and only place that I will eat chicken katsu curry. The portions are big (fit for two people) food is delicious . The curry is creamy , thick , and spicy (but not overly powering nor sweet). It comes with a side kimchi that is hot spicy , perfect seasoning of salt that goes perfectly with the dish. I usually don't eat gyoza , but I love the gyoza here. It's a little crispy with perfect amount of ginger flavor with an awesome dipping sauce. A fabulous lunch or dinner after a hard day at work or on a day off running errands. Service is quick and friendly. The owner remembers you, treats you well, and always polite. Love this place.

Well it was delayed for a decent amount of time, but I was told tonight that Taiyo will be shutting down at the end of the month. Aloha Mapo Ramen, gyoza and the best kimchee combo around. Thank you for feeding my family for the past 20+ years. Esp after UH games (if we won only). You will be missed.

Wow, were we happy to find out Taiyo Ramen is/was still open!  During my last visit to O'ahu in late 2022, one of the waitresses told me that they were closing soon...yet another condo building was going up.  Fast forward 1.5 years, they're still open.  Woo hoo!  Ate there three times in four weeks.  The chicken curry katsu is the bomb!  Gyoza and kimchi are also fantastic.  In fact, their kimchi is the best I've ever eaten anywhere, including South Korea. If you like authentic Japanese curry katsu, you'll love this tiny mom and pop place.   Go before it's closed forever

Stopped here for lunch. Ordered the shrimp fried rice with curry. The plate came and as you can tell by my pic...it was huge. Curry was packed with chicken and the normal veggies. The shrimp fried rice had lots of flavor and tons of shrimp. My son had the curry ramen and the bowl was wiped clean. He said the broth was really good and the noodles cooked perfectly.

Taiyo serves large and hearty ramen that warms up the heart! All of the ramen here is pretty basic but hits the spot every time. You definitely get your moneys worth! Service is quick and I was in and out.

My office likes to do lunch on Fridays so we have eaten here a couple of times. I am not a huge Ramen fan but this place is pretty good. Their broth is really good and the servings are quite large so you got a good value for your money. I would definitely go back.

Taiyo Ramen is more than just a restaurant; it's a cornerstone of the community, woven into the fabric of local history. As the area undergoes transformation, with plans to redevelop its current location into a condo complex, Taiyo Ramen stands as one of the few remaining tenants, holding onto its place amidst change. The bittersweet reality is that the beloved owner, a pillar of the establishment, has decided not to relocate but to retire once the inevitable move becomes necessary. This impending closure marks the end of an era for a place that has been a culinary haven for so many. Among the many gems on their menu, the standout is undoubtedly their kimchi fried rice. It's a dish that epitomizes comfort food, perfectly balancing flavor and heartiness. Each serving is a testament to the culinary mastery that Taiyo Ramen has been known for. If you haven't yet experienced the magic of their kimchi fried rice, now is the time. Whether as a dine-in experience or a take-out order, make sure to savor this dish before Taiyo Ramen closes its doors. It's not just a meal; it's a chance to be part of a legacy that has delighted taste buds for generations.

Ordering our usual here, Mabo Tofu Ramen and Chicken Katsu Ramen with curry base. Our favorites here. We don't know how much longer they will be here so we are trying to get here more often then our usual visits. Looking for a replacement, so if you have any suggestions, please send. Tables are clean, Korean channel tv is on and one server here at this time. Always friendly and courteous service here.

For some reason, I thought they were closed since the beginning of covid, but to my surprise, a friend posted that he recently went to Taiyo, and since I was in the area, I found that they were still open! Yes, Taiyo is still open, and my favorite Mabo Tofu, which nobody else makes it like they do was still a piping hot big bowl of noodles, drenched with large pieces of tofu with a korean style mabo tofu taste that satisfied me fully and rolling out the door. My friend said, OMG you ate all that? My fried ordered the katsu curry rice, and couldn't finish it, telling me to roll him out the door. As to mentioning that I thought they were closed several years ago, the lady did mention that they never did close, and they postponed the construction to build a new condo there, so they are going to be open until they are told to leave, but doesn't seem like anytime soon. Service was fast and courteous as usual. They still had the tv on the wall playing a kdrama. Lots of parking since Nijiya moved to inside Ala Moana. I will definitely be visiting Taiyo again to get my mabo tofu ramen fix.
